Our philosophy at Herbal Beauty is that beauty is being your natural, healthy self. We recognize the body's ability to heal and care for itself provided that it has the nutrients that it needs. This forms the foundation for all of our formulas. We have made the commitment to only use ingredients that are safe, natural, and nourish your skin's natural beauty. We don't promote covering anything up but instead offer safe and effective ways to nourish and protect your skin. We believe caring for your skin and body is not about correcting defects, but making the most of what you have.
What makes our products different from other skincare products?
Three things come to mind: freshness, ingredients, and customer service.
Freshness: We take pride in the freshness of our products. We make small batches to maximize the quality and freshness. Most often, a batch of soap or lotion is made and sold within 1-3 months. Also, the ingredients we use are are always fresh. I like to call it: from plant to product.
Customer service: One of my favorite things about my job is connecting with my customers. I love selling directly at markets and craft shows. This gives me the opportunity to listen to my customers and give my personal advice on skincare and on my products. I enjoy receiving emails and I personally answer each one.
Ingredients: Our ingredients are derived from natural sources and have been through minimal processing, when available we use organic, sustainable, local, and fair trade. For example, we use sustainable palm oil and fair trade Shea butter. When necessary, we use a mineral sourced preservative system- giving our products a shelf life of about 1-2 years. Our products are safe enough to use on a baby or someone with extra sensitive skin.
At Herbal Beauty, we only use plant based oils. They provide a protective barrier, and some even have properties similar to sebum and some have a natural SPF value. They provide moisture as well preventing moisture loss while allowing the skin to breathe and function normally. Plant oils also contain essential vitamins, fatty acids, and minerals, improving overall skin health and can reduce appearance of scars and wrinkles. At Herbal Beauty, we take it one step further and infuse our plant oils with organic herbs. This addition provides the skin with more vitamins, nutrients, protection, skin regenerative properties and when necessary, anti-bacterial properties.
At Herbal Beauty, we only use 100% pure essential oils. Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts found in specialized cells or glands of most plants. They are extracted from the roots, leaves, flowers, or the peel. The plant uses them for protection from predators and to attract pollinators. When used in cosmetics, they have a positive affect on our mind, body, and skin. They stimulate the mind and emotions through the sense of smell. When we inhale essential oils, impulses are sent to the Limbic System of the brain. The limbic system is directly connected to the parts of the brain that control heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, memory, stress levels, and hormone balance. They can be calming, stimulating, or up-lifting. Essential oils have a direct effect on the skin. They can maintain, heal, and regenerate the skin. Most EO's are anti-bacterial, antifungal, or antiviral. These properties can be beneficial in a healing balm or deodorant and help extend the shelf life of certain products.
It takes a massive amount of plant material to produce just a tiny bit of essential oil. Some examples are: 256 pounds of peppermint leaf to make one pound of peppermint essential oil, 150 pounds or more of lavender flowers to make one pound of lavender essential oil, and thousands of pounds of roses to make 1 pound of rose essential oil. They are so concentrated that 1 drop of peppermint EO is equivalent to about 25 cups of tea. Great care must be taken when using essential oils.
At Herbal Beauty we use a generous amount of herbs in each product. We grow every herb we use to become familiar with them and have a personal connection with them. Some ways we incorporate herbs in our product are: herbal oils and hydrosols.
Herbal oils are plant based oils, usually sunflower seed, that have been infused with dry herbs. There are a couple of different methods to make herbal oils, but my favorite is the solar method. I fill a glass jar about 1/2 full with dry herbs and cover with the oil. I let it sit in a sunny window for about 4-6 weeks and shake it daily. During this process, the oil-soluble, healing constituents like essential oils, vitamins, and resins, are extracted from the herbs. I use herbal oils in my lip balm, salves, lotions, and body oils.
Another way we incorporate herbs into our products is with hydrosols, also known as flower/floral waters. They are produced by distilling fresh leaves, fruits, flowers, and other plant materials. They have similar therapeutic properties to essential oils, but are much less concentrated. Their aromas are often soft and subtle. This comes from the water soluble constituents in the plant material that are not present in the essential oil. I love hydrosols because they are not as strong as essential oils, you can use them undiluted on the skin and are safe and effective alternative, especially for babies, pregnant women, and people with extra sensitive skin.
Both herbal oils and hydrosols contain many soothing properties. Some examples are: anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, increase circulation, astringent, anti-itch, moisturizing, improve skin regeneration, calming, soothing, cooling, and so much more.
